What a trip! Some Japan highlights and a massive thank you to Liz and Jeff in Chiswick who so kindly put me up and drove me to and from the airport at the start and end of this journey. It's always such a joy staying with them and catching up, they are a true inspiration xx ❤️

Arita Sera ... this place was built to sell potter

Arita Sera ... this place was built to sell pottery to Japanese and foreign tourists. With a trendy bakery, 4 star hotel, and the best ramen bowl display ever. Some of the shops were ultra modern, notably 2016 with work produced in Arita using the best of the regions highly skilled workforce, with designs by the Swedish designer Ingegard Raman. From this to imported factory made pots including the John Lenon and Pot Noodle range of ceramics ... I'm confused!

I ❤️ Osaka. Found the best rose garden I've ever seen (and I've been to the Chelsea flower show darling), then saw the most beautiful pots in my life at the museum of oriental ceramics, had lunch at the train station, did some shopping, visited a "farm" and did some "light hiking" on top of a skyscraper, saw some insane lit up buildings, had sushi and a cocktail, toddled back to the hotel on the tube and saw some street art. What a day!

The Shingama pottery factory was like going back in time, I imagine this is what Stoke on Trent ceramic factories might have felt like back in the day. Most of the staff were dong the underglaze painting, and the designs felt distinctly Dutch, but most of this work is for the Japanese market. It was great to see the huge gas kilns and track system for loading them, as well as the handle attachment process for slip cast mugs. The office was another world and made me realise why so few potteries replied to my emails ahead of this visit (aside from the language barrier) ... spot the computer? #kilnsandenergy

What a privilege to meet Shigemasa Kajihara, the second son of the Shingama pottery dynasty who has now retired as professor of ceramics at Kyusyusangyo University, and was trained by 'national living treasure' Inoue Manji. He's worked on Caledon glazes his whole career and studied ancient kilns in China. Shigemasa gave me a tour of his workshop, kilns and gallery, and then his very kind wife made us tea.

Thanks Yosuke and Mizuho for the studio tour! The Kimura family are a 10th generation pottery family in Bizen. They had just finished firing their wood kiln with around 4000 pots inside. It took a month to pack and will take 2-3 weeks to unload. The firing takes 12 days, and then 7-10 days to cool down from 1230. They use 10 tonnes red pine wood from the local area or 1500 bundles (the wire in the pic is from all the bundles from this firing). Yozuka noted the clay is not as strong as stoneware clays, but is fired until vitrified (water tight). The family kiln is 40 years old and will be rebuilt after 60 yrs by professional kiln builders.

Thanks Mayumi @bizen_kazuya assistant who took me

Thanks Mayumi @bizen_kazuya assistant who took me to the historic ruins of the Minamioogama kilns, in Bizen. The ground is covered with broken discarded pottery, the massive scale of the kilns footprint climbing up the hillside is incredible, no wonder it took a whole town to fire them. We then visited Kazuyas mum and dad and his noborigama (4 chamber climbing) kiln, with 50 cm thick hard brick walls, 1 firing does around 1000 pots, uses 1500 bundles of red pine wood, and takes 10 days to fire. The first three days are fired on gas to get rid of moisture, then 7 days continuously loading wood. This takes 3 people working in shifts 24 hours a day. Then it takes 10 Days to cool down! Kazuya is putting a modern spin on traditional Bizen ware and is experimenting with local porcelain. He's built an anagama kiln, in the pics, and I met some of his friends in town. Particularly notable was @kagiyama_gallery_bar with his pop up gallery and bar promoting Bizen ware. There was even a guy selling delicious sashimi to top it off. Yum! Thanks Bizen folks for the hospitality, it made me feel hopeful that there is a new generation carrying on the traditions, putting their own contemporary twist on Bizen ware, and keeping the town vibrant. #kilnsandenergy #bizen

I consider myself too old to insta my food, but this was too good to miss. Arriving in Imbe this morning I'm served this treat in Bizen ware ... couldn't be more different to the fine and highly decorated porcelain of Arita. So beautiful.

Such a useful education at Kyushu Ceramics Museum

Such a useful education at Kyushu Ceramics Museum exploring influences from Korea, China, and Europe especially give all the trading with the Dutch East India Company. Displays included works by Japan's national living treasures (they really value their potters!) And possibly one of the stranges clocks I have ever seen... I'll post a film of it working if your are interested?

Various bits of the process masterfully executed @

Various bits of the process masterfully executed @gen_emon_kiln, many thanks for letting me see all this ... the gas kilns were out of bounds though! The studio was a hive of activity, so much hand painting, so many steady hands. This was quite typical or the sort of studio I've seen in Japan, no insulation, kerosene heaters, very energy intensive strip lights ... and a total focus on craftsmanship.

Thank you so much Mr Fukagawa @fukagawa_honten for the incredibly informative tour of your factory and ceramics museum filled with pieces made for emperors, kings and queens. No pictures allowed, but I learned so much. This company employs 70 people, some of whom have been mastering their craft for 40 years, and it was a great honour to see them working. There are 7 very large gas kilns, and a wood fired climbing kiln that's used once a year (only the masters work goes in). In 1695 Fukagawa started trading with Watt Co in Birmingham and exporting Arita ware to England. The factory is similar to what Stoke on Trent potteries must have been like, and the quality of the work is exquisite, all handmade and painted.
The walls in Arita are built high and filled with broken pots to hide the potters secrets. The kaolin mine is no longer used in the town but supplied the stone to make the porcelain for hundreds of years.
The lunch is @gallery_arita where you order tea and get to select the cup you want from the walls!
